NON-DISCRIMINATION STATEMENT

NHSMUN is dedicated to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all delegates regardless of race, color, religion, gender expression, sexual orientation, or disability. In accordance with the Irvine Unified School District Non-Discrimination Policy, we will seek to make all reasonable accommodations for delegates and advisors upon request. We recognize that diversity is integral in cultivating an environment conducive to developing a well-rounded worldview, particularly in Model UN, and therefore encourage all interested delegates to register regardless of their background and experience.

PRE-WRITTEN RESOLUTIONS

One of the cornerstones of Model UN is being able to competitively collaborate with others under time pressure. Thus, following the conventions of UNA-USA / Harvard committee style, NHSMUN will not allow pre-written resolutions to be brought into committee. Collaboration or substantive discussion between delegates before the first committee session is also strongly discouraged.

Chairs and staff suspecting a delegate of breaking these rules reserve the right to investigate the delegate’s prepared research/materials. If conclusive evidence is found of a pre-written resolution being used in committee, the delegate will be disqualified from all possible awards, and their advisor will be notified.

POSITION PAPER GUIDELINES

Position papers are an essential element of committee preparation. The document should not only convey the stance of the country/entity you are representing, but it should also discuss potential solutions to the ideas at hand. The bulk of pre-conference preparation is often done within position paper research. See your respective background guide for deadlines and submission forms.

To receive feedback on position paper and be considered for research awards, a PDF copy of your position papers must be submitted by April 14, 2024 at 11:59pm.

The deadline for the U.S. Senate committee has been extended to April 21st at 11:59 PM

Papers are highly encourgaged, but optional for GA/Specialized Committees. Position papers are MANDATORY for award consideration in the Advanced JCC Committee and must be submitted before the start of the first committee session.

Requirements:

  • 2 page max (not including Works Cited page)

  • 12-point Times New Roman font, single-spaced

  • All external sources of information must be cited through the usage of MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited page

Delegates may find it helpful to divide their paper into 3 main sections:

  • Background / UN Involvement

  • Country Position / Character Profile

  • Proposed Solutions

(Please be advised that these are simply guidelines, and your paper does not necessarily have to follow this format. Additionally, position papers for crisis committees may differ in content, as you will probably be researching a person, rather than a country; however, you are still welcome to take the above sectioning recommendations into consideration.)
